SDC 2009 Session material

At the beginning of this week I gave two sessions at the SDN Conference at Papendal (Netherlands). The content of this sessions was about

  1. Social Networking in SharePoint 2007 - Building innovative WebParts using SharePoint, AJAX and jQuery
  2. E-Commerce using SharePoint 2007 and Commerce Server 2009

Abstract Session 1: We al know: LinkedIn, Twitter, and Hyves. Since we're using SharePoint for public internetsites more and more I developed a messaging webpart for SharePoint for quick sharing messages. This uses innovative techniques as AJAX.NET, jQuery and mySites. I will use this example to explain some SharePoint development concepts for developing innovative webparts in combination with Social Messaging. Level: 200 - Intermediate.

Abstract Session 2: Did you know the Netherlands has over 20,000 WebShops? Since a lot of customers use SharePoint it's possible that some people have to build a webshop in SharePoint. Are you writing all that kind of webparts using custom code? Or do you feel more about an out of the box e-commerce site using SharePoint? On the Dutch DevDays 09 I spoke about Commerce Services 2009 for SharePoint. Since I was a last-minute speaker (I replaced a session) there is a chance you skipped my presentation. Now you've got a second chance. Level: 100 - Beginners

All attendees received a nice green bag containing a CD with all the session and demo material. For the people who lost their CD or didn't attend the SDC, you can get the presentations here (Dutch):

2)      Wacht op de activatie mail van Microsoft Nederland (dit kan enkele minuten duren);

4)      Ga naar www.devdays.nl en login met je emailadres en gekozen wachtwoord;

5)      Ga naar mijn sessievoorstel: https://www.devdays.nl/Media/Detail.aspx?id=ff7fe69c-fbd1-422f-9063-ddff77481ff6

6)      Klik op de groene duim onder mijn foto om je stem uit te brengen;

Top!

Stress tips for developers

Of course everybody likes the nice part of his job. I think the most appreciated moment is when a customer gets a solution which is for 100% meeting their requirements. A customer often talks about the things which are not good instead of talking about your good job. Of course because he/she is paying you and wants as most as possible for his money (you would also do?!).

If you showed a lot of commitment and worked 24/7 it could be hard if a customer is not as happy with a solution as you thought.

What makes it hard for most of us to handle those situations? The answer is quite easy. Developers are logical and analytic thinkers.
In our daily job, study and so on we're developing the left part of our brain: the logical and analytic part and not the right part: the emotional part.

The right part is the part we worked on in our child time. This is because a lot of us will say: "could I be a child again, then life would be much easier".
By the way: the most efficient way of learning is using or left and right half of our brain together. Best case is synchronizing them.

If you get into a stress situation remember the following quotes which will help you looking to the positive part and not the negative:

1) Faults do not exist in our lifecycle: only learning moments
2) Look to the things you have and not to the things you don't have (the glass is half full or half empty, a great difference)
3) Stress doesn't solve our problems. It only takes energy of today!
4) They who give up, will never know how close they were to their goal
5) It's not what you are, but who you are
6) It doesn't matter how often you fall, but how often you get up
7) Fear is critical for ideas!
8) My experience could be changed by changing my mind
9) It's not about what you do, but how you feel by doing it
10) Don't get f*cked up by things, but wonder yourself "why" this could happen

Try it, it worked for me! If you have other suggestions, please feel free to place a comment below.
